Blind Dog Has Her Own Seeing Eye Dog

Meet Ellie and Leo. Ellie the young Cavalier King Charles spaniel is almost completely blind. Ellie was part of a litter of five puppies rescued from harsh conditions by the Rochdale’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, says Julie Lander, an RSPCA volunteer and Leo and Ellie’s owner. She was kept in the dark with no heat so a combination of cataracts and underdeveloped eye muscles left her only with the ability to see shadows. And this is where Leo the German Shepherd stepped in!

Leo always had a soft spot for little dogs so he decided he was in charge of keeping Ellie safe. He guides her along when they go on walks and he herds more rambunctious dogs away. They snuggle together and have become the best of friends.

No one  is sure if Leo even understands Ellie is disabled or if his protective nature is just based on her size but it doesn’t matter to Leo! Ellies owner and a local animal organization are working to raise money for a vision-restoring operation and if she receives it, it will be interesting to see if that changes her relationship with Leo. Although they already have had at least one fundraiser, the RSPCA does not yet have enough money to pay for Ellie’s operation. If you would like to donate, go to www.rspca-rochdale.org.uk.

What a wonderful, heart-warming story! I have a feeling Leo understands sweet Ellie needs extra attention. 🙂
